Way before our son was born I decided that I was going to nurse all of my kids. After he was born and doing it was the challenge. When I went through the Lamaze class the teacher told us to not use regular bras while nursing because they will constrict your breast and clog your milk ducts. So I went a few days without really wearing one.
I was too tired all the time to deal with it but after I leaked about 10 oz on my bed I had to go buy one. I went to Motherhood Maternity and bought one really quick not doing any research, just wanted to get in and out. I ended up buying an underwire bra that was way to big. I found this out when I was in the beginning stages of mastitis.
We went to our Lactation Consultant and went through the one on one with her and she helped my son latch on properly and then she looked at my bra. She asked what my normal bra size was and I told her I had no idea why? She said to me that my bra was two sizes to big and you never wear an underwire bra while nursing. She then measured me for the proper bra size and found out what size I was and then she gave me four choices for bra styles. I just went with Bravado! The Original Nursing Bra.
I will tell you that was the best money I spent on a bra. She showed me the proper way to put the bra on and how to position my breasts in the bra. One thing I learned early on, if you're going to nurse, always wear a nursing bra pad. At night I found it was the worst with leakage. I found that I preferred the Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads better than the others.
So, after a while of having only one bra I decided to go back to Motherhood and buy some cheaper nursing bras now that I know what my breast size was. I bought a few of the nursing sleep wrap bras from Motherhood Maternity because they were cheap. The bras worked fine up until my breasts became engorged from not feed my son at night as often as I did during the daytime. So after a week of dealing with a huge mess of that, I went back to my lactation consultant and bought a few more bras from Bravado!.
I can't stop saying awesome things about how nice and comfortable they are. The only thing was the price. They are a little pricey for me but I will gladly spend the money again, which I did after our daughter was born.
One trick I will tell you about getting into any nursing bra. When put the bra on, unsnap the snaps, bend forward a little and then cup your breasts and just lift them a little and then snap it back up (don't forget your nursing pad) and stand up. You'll feel so much better and your breasts will thank you.
So, if you decide to nurse, go and spend the money on the nursing bras because it will help keep you comfortable and your baby happy. If you ever need help with breast feeding or have any questions, you should always call a lactation consultant or setup a one on one appointment with them. Lactation consultants should be located in or around your hospital. They really do help you and make the whole thing a little easier.
I can't stress this enough. Never feel stupid for any questions or concerns you may have, they will not laugh at you. You'll find out that you aren't the only person to have that problem or whatever the case maybe. If you find a good one, stick with her because she is the other half to your support system. Breastfeeding is and can be painful for you but the consultants do know what they are doing and make it more bearable and then you can nurse longer than without help.
I hope this is helpful and you enjoy your bonding time with your baby as you nurse them.
